SUMMARY

Autumn M. Brogan, M.D., M.P.H., is an emergency physician, educator and global health leader whose work focuses on strengthening emergency and critical care systems in resource‑limited, conflict‑affected and rural settings. She develops scalable, sustainable education models — such as train‑the‑trainer faculty development programs, procedural and resuscitation workshops, and online and simulation‑based platforms — to expand emergency medicine and critical care capacity. She also collaborates with ministries of health, academic institutions and nongovernmental partners across Asia, Eastern Europe and Latin America to support curriculum development, tele‑education initiatives, and team‑based trauma and critical care training.

Dr. Brogan's research centers on curriculum design, remote education and implementation‑focused strategies to improve emergency care delivery in austere environments. She leads initiatives in patient safety and quality improvement, contributing to global consensus-based emergency department safety checklists and projects that strengthen adherence to evidence‑based care. Her work increasingly integrates digital innovation through the use of artificial intelligence-enabled tools that enhance simulation debriefing, strengthen CPR training and improve competency assessment for clinicians serving in low‑resource international environments and rural hospitals throughout the United States.

Focus areas

  • Global emergency medicine education. Dr. Brogan leads programs that build emergency medicine capacity in low-resource settings through curriculum development and telemedicine training. These initiatives enhance clinical skills and system-based care in regions such as Asia, Eastern Europe and Latin America.
  • Patient safety and quality improvement. Dr. Brogan develops global consensus-driven safety checklists for emergency departments and implements projects that improve adherence to treatment guidelines. These efforts strengthen patient safety and standardize care delivery internationally.
  • Workforce development and innovation. Dr. Brogan assesses alternative emergency department triage patterns and healthcare professional use strategies to enhance cost effectiveness, operational efficiency and patient flow. This includes evaluating staffing models and developing training approaches that equip clinical teams to deliver high-quality care across diverse settings.
  • Global health and trauma care research. Through collaborations on studies such as STOP-Trauma and TRACK, Dr. Brogan advances team-based critical care education for trauma patients in conflict and resource-limited environments, improving survival and care quality.

Significance to patient care

Dr. Brogan's research improves patient care in places where limited staff, equipment or training can make emergency treatment difficult. She helps strengthen these systems by teaching hands‑on procedures, using medical simulation and supporting telemedicine programs. This provides healthcare professionals — both around the world and in rural communities in the United States — with the skills and tools needed to provide safer, faster and more effective care during serious emergencies.

Her contributions help reduce preventable deaths, support stronger and more reliable health systems, and promote fair access to high‑quality emergency care no matter where patients live.
