Up close clinical research experience
Research fellows in the Crawford Fellowship can observe surgical and outpatient clinical patient care in a busy tertiary care practice.
James Russell Crawford and Martha Crawford Endowed Clinical Research Fellowship in Otolaryngology
The James Russell Crawford and Martha Crawford Endowed Clinical Research Fellowship in Otolaryngology — also known as the Crawford Fellowship — is made possible by a generous gift from James and Martha Crawford. It is specifically geared toward U.S. medical school graduates who are interested in otolaryngology and early-career otolaryngologists trained outside the United States who are seeking an opportunity to:
- Design study protocols.
- Participate in current clinical studies.
- Perform data analysis.
- Produce original manuscripts for publication.
- Submit abstracts for national and regional meetings.
Mayo Clinic's Department of Otolaryngology — Head and Neck Surgery in Florida has a busy tertiary care surgical practice with an abundance of untapped clinical experience and data awaiting assimilation, presentation and publishing. Our medical and surgical records are completely electronic with search engines to facilitate data mining.
As a research fellow, you will be given an opportunity to immerse yourself in the research side of clinical practice and gain invaluable experience and training for your future career. In the Crawford Fellowship, you'll assist with ongoing projects, database management and data acquisition. You'll also have opportunities to develop research ideas, work with biostatisticians to create statistical plans and attend faculty research meetings.
The scope of the fellowship includes all disciplines of otolaryngology. Our surgeons subspecialize in:
- Advanced endoscopic sinus surgery.
- Head and neck oncological surgery.
- Laryngology.
- Otology-neurotology.
Please note that this fellowship is for clinical research only and therefore there is no direct responsibility for, or participation in, either surgical or outpatient clinical patient care. However, you would have opportunities to observe these practices.
Participation in the Crawford Fellowship leads to original manuscripts for presentation at meetings and for publication. The number of publications and projects you can participate in is directly related to your motivation and efficiency. The department will encourage you to take a leadership role and earn first authorship in your primary project.
Conference presentation opportunities
Crawford fellows are encouraged to network and present at national otolaryngology conferences.
