The Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine-Research at Mayo Clinic investigates advances in anesthetic care. Improving anesthetic care and pain control

Through advances gained in research, we're improving anesthetic techniques in anesthesia and pain management for patients in cardiology, obstetrics and pediatrics and across the spectrum of care.

Overview

The Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine-Research at Mayo Clinic conducts a wide range of research related to anesthetic techniques, perioperative medicine and pain management.

Investigators in our department have diverse research interests. These range from basic science investigations of anesthetic effects on subcellular function to advanced clinical projects that have a direct impact on patient care, such as improving chronic pain management and reducing the need for perioperative transfusions.

With an extensive multidisciplinary faculty, we're developing cutting-edge technologies in anesthesiology, including using gene therapy to treat cardiovascular disease in the perioperative period. Our department also engages in collaborative research with numerous Mayo Clinic physicians and scientists. Our work includes a broad spectrum of conditions that benefit from improved anesthetic techniques and pain management and that require specialized care, including anesthesiology use in obstetrics and pediatrics.

Our department seeks a better understanding of genomics, proteomics, lung biology, pharmacology and other basic science related to anesthesia to improve outcomes for people who need anesthesia and pain management.

Our department also includes the Anesthesia Clinical Research Unit (ACRU). The ACRU provides research support to Mayo Clinic faculty members and external industry sponsors for research within the fields of anesthesiology, critical care and pain management.
