Patients undergoing spine lumbar surgery will be asked to perform short exams/questionnaires aimed at determining cognitive function, quality of life, health outcomes twice post surgery with a baseline performance prior to surgery.
The primary aim of this study is to determine the biomarkers involved in pain and inflammatory response to spine surgery, and to investigate potential differences between different anesthetic modalities, spinal anesthesia vs general anesthesia vs general anesthesia with a spinal block for spine surgery.
The purpose of this study is to determine the epigenetics involved in spinal pathologies through the performance of molecular genetic studies that seek to investigate genetic predisposition to neurodegenerative disease. The role of epigenetics in disease progression is increasingly becoming a topic of interest. Understanding how epigenetics influences the expression of genes will be extremely helpful in elucidating causes for the presentation of spine disease as well as the variation in recovery outcomes among this patient population.
