  • THAM VErsus Sodium BiCarbOnate In CaRdiac SuRgical PatiEnts, A PragmatiC, Comparative-effectiveness Prospective Trial Rochester, Minn.

The purpose of this study is to compare the effectiveness of two commonly used buffer agents to treat metabolic acidosis in patients following cardiac surgery, sodium bicarbonate and THAM. Patients undergoing cardiac surgery requiring cardiopulmonary bypass who arrive to the ICU with a metabolic acidosis will be randomized to receive one of the two buffer agents. Currently, it is unknown which buffer agent is more effective and use is determined by clinician preference and impression of availability.
