Michael B. Colgan, M.D.

What attracted you to medicine and dermatology?

I have never been able to sit still. I have eclectic interests and I love meeting new people. Dermatology is fast paced and there is an incredible amount of variety in the diseases, the patients, and the tools that we use to diagnose and treat those patients and their diseases.

What attracted you to Mayo Clinic for residency training?

I was attracted to the interesting patients, talented colleagues, and Mayo's world-class reputation.

What makes the Mayo Clinic dermatology residency unique?

I enjoy the fascinating variety of diseases. We see the more-common diseases, but we also have the opportunity to see, frequently, some disorders that some physicians might come across only once in their entire career.

I love my job. I get to meet interesting people every day. I consider sharing an office with my fellow residents to be the most fun working environment I could envision and I believe I'll probably still feel the same way in 30 years.

What do you enjoy about living in Rochester?

I enjoy the four seasons ... and all the outdoor activities that can be pursued during each of them. I enjoy camping, fly fishing, hiking, bow hunting, mountain biking, cross country skiing, here an in the mountains out west.

What does your future look like right now?

I will stay at Mayo Clinic to complete the Dermatologic Surgery Fellowship and then I will need to find a job.
