Katelyn Cowan, M.D.
What attracted you to medicine and pediatrics?
My mother is a family medicine physician and I was inspired by her work and interested in medicine at a young age. I started medical school having no idea where my career would go. However, once I began my pediatric rotation, it was an easy decision. I had a lot in common with the pediatric residents and faculty; and was ultimately won over by the patients themselves.
What attracted you to Mayo Clinic for residency training?
I was drawn by Mayo’s renowned reputation and commitment to patient-centered care. My interview experience with the Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine Department at Mayo was exceptional. The staff and residents were friendly, welcoming and also knew each other well, which was an important quality to me. The opportunities for research, interdepartmental networking, and diverse clinical experiences were abundant.
What makes the Mayo Clinic Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine Residency unique?
The program is uniquely receptive to individualized career plans. With the help of program leadership, I was able to get in touch with faculty members in my specialty of interest even before I matched. The high level of flexibility within the program allows for pursuit of a specific goal or exploration of multiple career pathways for those who are undecided.
Anything surprise you about Mayo's program?
I found the approachability of the staff to be surprising. I did not expect to have such a high comfort level working with the consulting physicians. There is a sense of collegiality here that is truly unique.
What is living in Rochester like for you?
Rochester is a great place to live, and I have been pleasantly surprised by the number of community activities and events that take place. “Thursdays on First” is a weekly outdoor street fair that has been a highlight of my summer. People here are friendly, traffic is light, and there are many trails for running or walking. My fiancé and I have found several restaurants that have quickly become favorites and enjoy exploring the surrounding area as well.
What does your future look like right now?
I am interested in pursuing a career in pediatric dermatology, but am open to anything at this point. I look forward to spending the next couple of years working and learning with a great group of residents.
