Ambulatory Care
Mayo Clinic Pharmacy provides care to a diverse patient population with a wide range of medical conditions and drug therapies. Approximately 1,000 patients visit Mayo Clinic per day and approximately 3,500 prescriptions are filled at the six outpatient pharmacies located on the Mayo campus. This rotation is based in the Mayo building at a unique pharmacy where the prescriptions are filled at another offsite pharmacy. Student activities will focus on counseling patients, with additional emphasis on reviewing patient medical and medication histories, consulting with health care professionals, and preparing educational materials for pharmacy or clinic staff. Other learning experiences, such as didactic learning sessions with the preceptor and medical grand rounds, are also incorporated into each individual’s schedule.
Goals
The rotation will expose the student to the roles and functions of a pharmacist working in an outpatient pharmacy setting.
Objectives

- Broaden clinical knowledge of various disease states and their medication therapy

Pharmacy Management
The pharmacy management rotation is designed to give the student exposure to issues affecting pharmacy operations. Throughout the rotation, the student will meet with members of the management team to discuss pharmacy administration theories, financial management, technology advancements, inventory control, quality assurance and improvement, personnel management and interdisciplinary issues. During the rotation, students will also learn about the role of each manager within the department. The student will also attend various meetings, including pharmacy operations meetings and the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee meeting, throughout the rotation.
Goals
The rotation will enhance the student’s understanding of the roles and functions of the pharmacy management team in an integrated health care facility.
Objectives
- Describe basic principles of personnel management with emphasis on hiring, dismissal, training, promotion, salary structure, etc.
- Illustrate management of risk involved in outpatient pharmacy
- Describe marketing principles as they relate to business promotion and advertising
- Manage third party-program decisions
- Describe methods of inventory purchase and control
- Demonstrate the ability to interpret monthly and yearly financial statements for financial analysis and control
- List the purpose and activities of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee
- Describe the process of formulary development and the problems related to its management and enforcement
Research Support
The research support rotation is designed to expose the student to issues involved in outpatient dispensing of investigational medication. Responsibilities include reviewing research protocols to identify pharmacy services needed and providing budget estimates for their provision; storing, dispensing (or distributing) study medications; allocating treatment in some blinded trials; and meeting all regulatory and accountability requirements for investigational drug handling. The student may be involved in providing investigational drug information to investigators, study coordinators and participants as requested. The student will also attend various clinical research meetings occurring during the rotation and gain an understanding of research roles available to pharmacists.

The rotation will provide the student with an understanding of the roles and functions of a pharmacist in the outpatient investigative study setting.

- Discuss the phases of clinical investigation
- Describe the steps involved in submitting a new drug application
- Explain the role of the Institutional Review Board as it relates to clinical trials
- Understand and explain the process involved in dispensing study medications
- Participate in various meetings related to outpatient pharmacy research
- Understand and justify how the pharmacy budget for a research project is developed
- Understand the required documents and assist in setting up a new study binder
- Summarize the regulations and guidelines defining Good Clinical Practice for drug studies
Evaluation
The evaluation tool required by the student’s college of pharmacy will be used by the rotation preceptors.
