Clinical Laboratory Science Internship

Program Description
Students enrolled in clinical laboratory science baccalaureate programs at our affiliated education institutions complete six months of laboratory rotations in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology at Mayo Clinic during the final year of their college education.

The length of the rotation is flexible and depends upon the affiliated institution’s guidelines and requirements.

Accreditation
Mayo School of Health Sciences’ Clinical Laboratory Science Internship is accredited by The National Accrediting Association of Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS). In addition, all of Mayo Clinic’s college and university affiliates are NAACLS accredited.

Mayo Clinic is also accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools Higher Learning Commission.

Facilities
Mayo Clinic’s Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology is one of the largest clinical laboratories in the world. It’s comprised of 1,600 people working in 40 specialty laboratories. Mayo Clinic performs more than 13 million tests each year.

A highly skilled team of pathologists, physicians, scientists, clinical laboratory scientists, clinical laboratory technicians, biologists, chemists, geneticists and other specialists performs lab work. We receive patient specimens for testing from Mayo Clinic and clinics and hospitals worldwide.

The wide repertoire of test services, the high volume of specimens we receive for testing, and our diverse and highly educated faculty make us an ideal educational setting for students in clinical laboratory science training programs.

The Mayo Clinic campus in Rochester comprises an extensive outpatient complex, two hospitals, and research and education facilities. It is among the largest, most advanced medical centers in the world.

Graduation and Certification
Upon successful completion of your Clinical Laboratory Science Internship, you will receive a Certificate of Completion from Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, School of Health Sciences.

Upon graduation from your college or university, you may need to obtain licensure, depending on the state where you seek employment. Information on licensure is available from state departments of health or boards of occupational licensing.

Certification is a voluntary process by which a nongovernmental organization, such as a professional society or certifying agency, grants recognition to an individual whose professional competence meets prescribed standards. Widely accepted by employers in the health industry, certification is a prerequisite for most jobs and often is necessary for advancement.

Hours
For the majority of the internship, your learning schedule will include eight-hour days, five days per week.

Class Size
Each year, Mayo School of Health Sciences admits six to eight students to its Clinical Laboratory Science Internship at Mayo Clinic in Rochester. This ensures you will receive a comprehensive educational experience with one-on-one instruction.
