Program Description
Mayo School of Health Sciences (MSHS) in Rochester, Minn., offers a nine-month Histology Technician Program. The program offers an exceptional educational experience by providing high-quality didactic (through the University of North Dakota [UND]) and clinical experiences (through Mayo Clinic) needed to create a well-rounded, fully competent histology technician.

Our commitment is to develop bright, ambitious future leaders in the field of histology through a curriculum that provides an excellent knowledge base, proven through academic achievement and highly proficient technical and troubleshooting skill development.  Dedicated, future professionals who serve all patients as their primary focus and value lifelong learning will be the hallmark of our histology technician program.

The Histology Technician Program provides instruction on how to properly gross, fix, process, embed, cut and stain tissue, as well as troubleshoot technical issues that may arise in the laboratory setting.

Facilities
Mayo Clinic’s histology technician training facilities were designed specifically for the program and are located in close proximity to the histology-based laboratories.  The facilities provide an excellent training environment and include areas dedicated to lectures and technical aspects of histology.  Each area has state-of-the-art equipment.

Didactic and clinical experiences in electron microscopy, immunohistochemistry, cytology preparation techniques, enzyme histochemistry and molecular pathology are unique aspects to our program highlighted in our enrichment curriculum.

Graduation and Certification
When you complete the Histology Technician Program, you will receive a certificate of completion from the Mayo School of Health Sciences and the University of North Dakota.

Graduates are eligible to take the examination to become a certified histology technician, offered by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (www.ascp.org).

Hours
For the majority of the classroom instruction and clinical rotations, your learning schedule will include eight-hour days, five days per week.

Class Size
Up to eight students will be enrolled per class, with a minimum of one class per year.  We anticipate that, in time, class sizes will grow.  However, class sizes and clinical groups will remain intimate learning opportunities, with one-on-one instruction provided.
