Program Description
Mayo School of Health Sciences (MSHS) offers a four-month Hemodialysis Patient Care Technician (HPCT) Program at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. The program provides comprehensive clinical knowledge and skills that enable practitioners to provide hemodialysis to patients.

The program teaches students how to work with patients and how to use hemodialysis equipment properly. The program focuses on helping students learn to take vital signs, obtain vascular access, take blood samples and work comfortably with patients and their families.

Program Goal
The goal of this program is to provide each student with the knowledge base and clinical skills necessary to assure high-quality patient care to those who have Stage V kidney disease.

Facilities
The Mayo Clinic campus in Rochester comprises an extensive outpatient complex, two hospitals, and research and education facilities. It is among the largest, most advanced medical centers in the world.

Mayo Clinic Dialysis Services (MCDS) includes eight hemodialysis units within a 130-mile radius of Rochester. Dialysis unit sizes range from six to 24 chairs, comprising a total of 117 chairs, and serving more than 460 patients. The current staffing configuration for the hemodialysis units includes one registered nurse (RN) working with two patient care or hemodialysis technicians (PCT) or one PCT and one licensed practical nurse (LPN). This team is responsible for the care of up to nine patients. The primary education site for this program is Mayo Clinic in Rochester, but rotations may be completed at hemodialysis facilities in the surrounding area.

Graduation and Certification
Upon successful completion of the HPCT program, you will receive a Certificate of Completion from Mayo School of Health Sciences.

Graduates must obtain national certification within 18 months of being hired into and working in the hemodialysis patient care setting.

Hours
For the majority of the program, your learning schedule will include Monday through Friday with occasional weekends. Hours will vary with rotation.

Class Size
Twice each year, Mayo School of Health Sciences admits five to six students to its HPCT Program at Mayo Clinic in Rochester. The small class size ensures you will receive close one-on-one instruction and a comprehensive educational experience.
