The FISH image on the right confirms that a translocation between chromosomes 9 and 22 (ABL and BCR genes) has occurred (normal pattern would be 2 red and 2 green). This translocation is associated with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) and acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). The karyotype on the left shows important results that indicate the patient is in an advanced stage of the cancer (an extra chromosome 8 and isochromosome 17q are both associated with advanced stage CML). The FISH results only focus on the BCR and ABL genes so they cannot provide the additional information that comes from the karyotype.
