Several different types of FISH probes are available. Some are used to visualize small segments of DNA (Centromere, Locus Specific and Telomere) and others are used to see entire chromosomes (Paint and M-FISH) . Another strategy applies two types of probes to the same specimen to ensure that the proper cells are being scored (Combined FISH). FISH testing is becoming more intricate as "panel tests" are being created. Panel testing employs multiple probes and potentially multiple strategies to the same patient specimen in order to identify several possible anomalies that may exist. The probes that can be included in a panel test for acute lymphoblastic leukemia are shown on the right.
