These blue circles are composed of DNA during the interphase portion of the cell cycle. The DNA is coiled and wrapped up at this time. Although individual chromosomes cannot be identified, FISH probes will still bind to the DNA. Because the cells do not have to be stimulated to divide like they are in classic cytogenetic analysis, interphase FISH results can be obtained quickly (i.e. - minimum of 4 hours, optimum is about 8 hours).
The image shows nuclei that demonstrate loss of a portion of chromosome 13 (orange signal). This deletion of chromosome 13 is common in patients patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and it occassionally occurs on both chromosomes in CLL. This same deletion can be seen in several other cancers.
