A new therapy, Revlimid, has been created to treat patients that have a deletion of the long arm of chromosome 5 as the sole anomaly in their karyotype. These patients are considered to be in a sub-group of Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS) and they respond better to Revlimid than patients with MDS and a normal karyotype.

Patients with the translocation 15;17 seen in Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia can be treated with a vitamin treatment called all trans-retinoic acid (ATRA) which promotes maturation of myeloid blood cells. This treatment has changed the prognosis for APL from poor to favorable if the disease is detected in its earlier stages.
