It is estimated that as many as 1 in every 250 people in the general population is a carrier of a balanced translocation or inversion. These chromosome anomalies rarely cause problems for the carrier but can lead to an inability to conceive or multiple miscarrriages in people of reproductive age. The karyotype above shows a balanced 11;22 translocation. A fetus conceived by this parent would have a high liklihood of receiving one of the abnormal chromosomes, resulting in either duplication of part of chromosome 22 or loss of part of 11.
