The Mayo School of Health Sciences Cardiology Nurse Practitioner Fellowship will prepare graduates of nurse practitioner programs to practice in cardiology specialty areas. The Cardiology Nurse Practitioner Fellowship curriculum is based upon core competencies which include knowledge, skills and understanding of health care areas.
By the end of the fellowship year, the fellow will have a working knowledge of the following areas:
- Cardiac risk and assessment
- Acute coronary syndrome
- Stress testing
- Interventional studies
- Cardiac arrhythmias
- Cardiac devices
- Advanced heart failure and device therapy
- Pulmonary hypertension
- Cardiomyopathies
- Adult congenital heart disease
- Anticoagulation
- Valvular heart disease
- Peripheral vascular disease
By the end of the fellowship year, fellow will have experience performing the following skills/procedures:
- Chest radiograph interpretation
- Electrocardiogram interpretation
- Stress Testing
- Problem-focused physical exam
- Development of treatment plan based on patient’s cardiac diagnosis or symptoms
- Focused patient presentation to supervising faculty
- NP role as a consultant
- NP role as a teacher
By the end of the fellowship year, the fellow will have a working knowledge and understanding in the following health care areas:
- Care of the elderly patient
- Care of the vulnerable populations
- Drug safety, pharmacoeconomics, and pharmacoepidemiology and complimentary medicine
- Equitable allocation of resources
- Evidence-based medicine
- Information management
- Leadership and management practices
Rotations
The Cardiology Nurse Practitioner Fellowship is comprised of rotations in the various specialty areas:
- General cardiology inpatient
- Electrophysiology inpatient and outpatient
- Cardiac Catherization Lab
- Cardiac diagnostic services
- Congenital heart inpatient and outpatient
- Advanced heart failure inpatient and outpatient
- Anticoagulation clinic inpatient and outpatient
- Cardiac rehabilitation inpatient and outpatient
- Cardiac health and P\performance outpatient
Grading or Evaluation
Mayo School of Health Sciences uses evaluative tools that include:
- Demonstration of skills
- Self-learning modules
- Monthly rotation preceptor evaluations
- End-year formal comprehensive evaluations
- End-year competency curriculum checklist components
- End-year manuscript or poster presentation submission to regional or national organization
- End-year updated CV submission
