Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine, Endocrinology (Minnesota)
Description
This elective introduces students to diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to common endocrine conditions in children and adolescents.
Students will participate in the work-up of new and returning endocrinology patients in the Mayo Building and Saint Marys Hospital.
During their rotation, students are expected to review:
- Growth, especially short stature and growth excess
- Sexual development, especially ambiguous genitalia
- Pubertal development, especially precocious and delayed puberty
- Thyroid problems, especially congenital hypothyroidism, acquired hypothyroidism and Graves' disease
- Adrenal problems, especially congenital adrenal hyperplasia, Cushing's syndrome and adrenoleukodystrophy
- Pituitary disease, especially pituitary failure and sellar and parasellar tumors
- Bone and calcium problems, especially abnormalities of parathyroid hormone and vitamin D
Specific goals
- Develop basic skills in history taking and physical examination as they relate to pediatric endocrinology
- Learn the indications for and develop knowledge of diagnostic tests commonly used in pediatric endocrinology
- Develop a differential diagnosis of short stature in children and a protocol for their investigation
- Understand the pathophysiology of diabetes mellitus and diabetic ketoacidosis in children and outline acute and chronic management of this disease
- Learn which relatively common endocrine conditions constitute a potential threat to the patient's health and which constitute variations of normal growth and development
- Describe the clinical course and management of hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism in children

Evaluation is performed using the Integrated Scheduling and Evaluation System (ISES).
