Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine, Endocrinology (Minnesota)

Description

This elective introduces students to diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to common endocrine conditions in children and adolescents.

Students will participate in the work-up of new and returning endocrinology patients in the Mayo Building and Saint Marys Hospital.

During their rotation, students are expected to review:

  • Growth, especially short stature and growth excess
  • Sexual development, especially ambiguous genitalia
  • Pubertal development, especially precocious and delayed puberty
  • Thyroid problems, especially congenital hypothyroidism, acquired hypothyroidism and Graves' disease
  • Adrenal problems, especially congenital adrenal hyperplasia, Cushing's syndrome and adrenoleukodystrophy
  • Pituitary disease, especially pituitary failure and sellar and parasellar tumors
  • Bone and calcium problems, especially abnormalities of parathyroid hormone and vitamin D

Specific goals

  1. Develop basic skills in history taking and physical examination as they relate to pediatric endocrinology
  2. Learn the indications for and develop knowledge of diagnostic tests commonly used in pediatric endocrinology
  3. Develop a differential diagnosis of short stature in children and a protocol for their investigation
  4. Understand the pathophysiology of diabetes mellitus and diabetic ketoacidosis in children and outline acute and chronic management of this disease
  5. Learn which relatively common endocrine conditions constitute a potential threat to the patient's health and which constitute variations of normal growth and development
  6. Describe the clinical course and management of hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism in children
