Clinical Research Training Program

Program Description

The aim of the Transplantation Surgery Fellowship Program at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., is to provide our fellows with the best possible foundation for a career in transplantation surgery. Each year, we perform 75-110 liver transplants, more than 200 kidney transplants, and 40-50 pancreas transplants. The Mayo Clinic transplantation surgical fellowship currently trains four transplant surgical fellows at a time. This fellowship training program offers the following two tracks.

American Society of Transplantation Surgery (ASTS) Accredited Fellowship
The ASTS has accredited Mayo Clinic for training in liver, kidney and pancreas transplantation. Generally, our fellows spend the first year in the research laboratory followed by two years in clinical transplantation.

The research experience includes opportunities for research in xenotransplantation, immunology, artificial liver support devices, and other basic research projects in all facets of transplantation. This year can also include training in human pancreas islet transplantation. Our fellows have been productive in the laboratory year and have presented at both national and international meetings. We feel strongly that a year of research is an important beginning to a career in transplantation surgery.

The second year focuses on kidney and pancreas transplantation, laparoscopic donor nephrectomy and vascular access. Four months of this year are spent on the liver transplant service. The final year consists of six months on liver transplantation, including living donor liver transplantation. The final four months are spent either on the liver or the kidney-pancreas transplant service with time allotted for special areas of interest such as islet cell transplantation, laparoscopic donor nephrectomy, or hepatobiliary surgery.

International Fellowship
Our international fellowship training program is designed to serve the needs of surgeons who seek top-level training and then return to their home country to practice transplantation. In the past, this fellowship has consisted of one or two years of training in clinical liver transplantation. It is our hope to make this fellowship nearly identical to the ASTS fellowship minus the research year. Thus, these fellows would spend the first year primarily on the liver

transplantation service and the second year primarily on the kidney-pancreas transplantation service.
