Clinical Research Training Program

Clinical Training
The regional fellowship is distinctly different from the regional resident rotation conducted during either the CA-2 or CA-3 year of training. It is intended to provide advanced training, with expectations for greater independence in the care of more complex patients undergoing major procedures.

You will not rotate outside of the regional practice.

Didactic Training
Didactic training is an integral part of Mayo Clinic's Regional Anesthesiology Fellowship Program. You will participate in:

  • Journal Clubs
  • Morbidity and Mortality Conferences
  • Formal practice oral examinations (if not already boarded)
  • Subspecialty Mini-lectures

Cardiac Life Support Certification
Certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) is required for all Mayo Clinic residents and fellows. ACLS courses are offered free of charge during the last week of June, just before the start of the academic year. In addition, the course is offered evenings every three months during the year to facilitate recertification.

Research Training
Bench and clinical research are major components of the fellowship. Following completion of the Regional Anesthesiology Fellowship, you will be able to enter any academic program with the experience necessary to conduct clinical research.

Teaching Opportunities
You will have the opportunity to teach Mayo medical students, visiting students, surgery residents, internal medicine residents, and anesthesia residents through operating room instruction and formal didactic lectures.

Call Frequency
The Regional Anesthesia fellow at Mayo Clinic Florida has no call obligations in order to maximize fellowship training.

Committee Assignments
You will have an opportunity to gain experience in a number of administrative capacities during your training. These include the department education council, education committee and quality assurance committee, as well as organizing a monthly Regional Anesthesia Journal Club. Fellows can also participate in committee assignments for the American Society of Anesthesiology (ASA), the Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation, the House of Delegates of the ASA and the state societies of anesthesiology in Minnesota, Florida or Arizona.

Evaluation
To ensure you acquire clinical and academic expertise in Regional Anesthesia your performance is monitored carefully during the course of the Regional Anesthesia Fellowship program.

Formal evaluation by supervising faculty members occurs bi-monthly, and each trainee is assigned a faculty adviser for the purpose of providing constructive feedback.

In addition, you will have the opportunity to evaluate faculty to ensure your educational needs are being met and to provide feedback to the faculty to guide their efforts to improve the program.

Career Development
You will meet periodically with your faculty adviser and the training program director to discuss individual goals. Mayo Clinic recruits many of its staff physicians from its own training programs.

Thus, after you complete the Regional Anesthesia Fellowship program, career opportunities may be available at one of Mayo Clinic's practice sites.

Moonlighting Policy
Moonlighting is permitted for licensed fellows. Moonlighting should not interfere with required learning and must not violate ACGME work hour rules. Moonlighting should not compromise your education, but rather enhance it.
