Clinical Research Training Program

Mayo Clinic radiologists and staff provide the highest-quality diagnostic and interventional imaging services in a caring and efficient manner, while sustaining outstanding programs in research and education.

The Cardiac Imaging Fellowship Program provides access to state-of-the-art facilities, including two Dual-Source CT scanners, two 1.5 Tesla MRI scanners which are primarily cardiac, and access to a 3T MRI.  Currently the cardiac radiology division averages about seven to eight clinical cardiac MRI scans (not including aorta and peripheral vascular cases), between four to five CT coronary angiograms per day, as well as a large number of CT scans for coronary calcium and pulmonary vein stenosis.  We have a large referral base of patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, cardiac amyloidosis, ST elevation myocardial infarction, atrial fibrillation, and pericarditis.

The cardiac radiology section has six staff radiologists, one staff cardiologist, and a Ph.D. physicist. The section is supported by the Radiology Department's strong infrastructure, which supports more than 20 clinical MRI scanners and 20 clinical CT scanners.

The nuclear cardiology laboratory is jointly run by the Department of Radiology and the Department of Medicine, Division of Cardiovascular Diseases.  This laboratory is internationally well respected, extremely busy, performing 20-50 examinations per day.  The Mayo Echocardiography Laboratory is internationally recognized and extremely busy, performing between 200 to 300 transthoracic echocardiograms per day.

There is also the potential for use of the Mayo Clinic’s extensive research facilities, including the newly opened Opus Imaging Research Facility, which has dedicated research MRI scanners, including high field strength scanners, Dual Source CT scanners, animal laboratories and other facilities for advanced, multi-modality imaging research

As a whole, the 100 year-old Radiology Department is fully integrated with all the medical services available at the Mayo Clinic. More than 140 radiologists and physicists cooperate with 1,000 support staff to provide diagnostic and therapeutic radiology services to patients.

Experts in all areas of radiology consult with specialists in other departments to "provide the best care to every patient every day." Radiologists work with state-of-the-art equipment, assisted by skilled technologists and nurses, to perform and interpret more than 900,000 examinations yearly. This large number of cases, integrated with ongoing research and education, results in wide-ranging expertise in the imaging and treatment of diseases affecting patients of all ages.
