Mayo Clinic Overview

Jenna Wheeler Anderson, M.D.Jenna Wheeler Anderson, M.D.
Program:
Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine, PGY-1, Mayo Clinic in Rochester
Hometown: Mantorville, Minn.
Medical School: University of Minnesota, Duluth

What attracted you to medicine and pediatrics?
"I was attracted to medicine because it was a way to combine my love of science with being able to help people improve their lives.  I was attracted to pediatrics because of the many opportunities for preventative care and every visit with a family is an opportunity for education.  Also, children are so unpredictable and fun. Every day my patients make me smile and laugh."

What attracted you to Mayo Clinic for residency training?
"I grew up near Rochester, always being exposed to the Mayo Clinic, but did not originally intend to return to my hometown.  The program had everything I wanted though in terms of opportunities, emphasis on education, work-life balance, size, and geographical location. When I came to my residency interview I was immediately struck by how happy the residents were.  They seemed to really love the program and everyone they worked with.  They all had a great rapport with each other which was very important to me when I was deciding on a residency program.  I feel very confident now that I made the right decision."

What makes the Mayo Clinic Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine Residency unique?
"There is a huge emphasis on education.  All of the consultants are always willing to answer questions and spend time teaching.  There are impromptu teaching sessions every day.  There are opportunities for any interest.  Anyone can easily get involved in research or other projects in any subspecialty."

What is living in Rochester like for you?
"Rochester is a great place to live.  My husband and I are enjoying the opportunity to spend time with our extended family members who live in the area.  Rochester is a very family orientated place and also a great place to be if you enjoy outdoor activities.  For people who enjoy time in a bigger city, the Twin Cities is easily accessible."

What does your future look like right now?
"Right now I’m looking forward to my next two years of residency.  Following residency I plan on going into general pediatrics.  I would like to work somewhere in Minnesota.  I am hoping to find somewhere I can do mostly clinical work but have an opportunity to teach medical students and/or residents as well."
