Mayo Clinic Overview

Rupjyoti Talukdar, M.B., B.S. Rupjyoti Talukdar, M.B., B.S.
Program: Gastroenterology, Pancreatology Fellowship, Advanced Fellow, Mayo Clinic Rochester
Hometown: Guwahati, India
Medical School: Gauhati Medical College, Guwahati, India

What attracted you to gastroenterology?
"Right from the beginning of medical school, I was intrigued by the gastrointestinal tract. During my residency in internal medicine, I often encountered patients with an array of GI disorders. I was fortunate enough to get the opportunity to learn and perform gastrointestinal endoscopies during my second year of residency. I found it exciting to see the GI tract and correlate the findings with the clinical profile of the patients. During my GI Fellowship, I encountered a huge number of patients with acute and chronic pancreatitis and realized how much there was to understand about this enigmatic organ. I always wanted to visualize the pancreas from a cellular and molecular perspective. This led me to spend some time in bench research on the pathophysiology of acute pancreatitis. This experience further enhanced my zeal to pursue pancreatology."

What attracted you to Mayo Clinic for fellowship training?
"Mayo Clinic is a dream place for any physician. As I became acquainted with the world-class academic, research and clinical profile of Mayo Clinic from peers and journal publications, my casual aspiration transcended to a focused goal. Moreover, to my knowledge, Mayo Clinic is the only place in the world that offers a comprehensive and structured Advanced Pancreas Fellowship."

What makes the Mayo Clinic Gastroenterology Fellowship unique?
"The structure of the program here has been designed with a blend of clinical training and research. Moreover, the academic environment created by the highly skilled and efficient faculty appears very unique to me. They are intellectuals in their respective subspecialties and always share their knowledge and experience with residents and fellows. They always encourage development of clinical thinking in a scientific and logical way … and at the same time teach to inculcate the concept of art in the science of medical practice. Presentations in national and international conferences are highly encouraged and funded. This is a great incentive for residents and fellows to excel in a certain subspecialty of their broad discipline."

Anything surprise you about Mayo's program?
"The zeal and enthusiasm of Mayo Clinic faculty to train and teach fellows and residents amazes me. They all are very approachable and are always ready to teach."

What is living in Rochester like for you?
"Rochester is a small, but nice place to live. It offers a serene atmosphere. It has a very cosmopolitan environment with people from different backgrounds. Traffic is never a problem and crime is almost unheard of. I love this place!"

What does your future look like right now?
"I look forward to initiate a comprehensive academic and clinical pancreatology practice in India after I complete this advanced fellowship. I already have begun initial communication with a few people there; and they appear to be very receptive and enthusiastic about the idea. My fellowship training at Mayo will undoubtedly give me an edge in pursuing my career dream of academic and clinical pancreatology."
