Program Description
Mayo Clinic's three-year Periodontics Residency Program is designed for dentists who are interested in a career in clinical periodontics. During the program, you will learn how to effectively diagnose and treat oral mucous membrane diseases, critically review and analyze pertinent scientific literature, and organize and conduct research projects.
Evaluation
Your progress will be reviewed by your program director at the end of each quarter. Your evaluation will be based on a personal interview and written examinations. During the residency, you must maintain at least a B average in all clinical and didactic courses. Each year, you will take the American Academy of Periodontology's In-service Training Examination.
Case Studies
Throughout this residency you will prepare patient presentations for multidisciplinary discussion.
Teaching Opportunities
You may have the opportunity to teach Mayo Medical School students and visiting students from other medical and dental schools through chair-side instruction and seminars.
Accreditation
The training program fulfills the requirements for training as stated by Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association.
Certification
You will be eligible to take the American Board of Periodontology certifying examination upon completion of the fellowship.
Program History
The Periodontics Residency began in 1966, and since that time, more than 24 dentists have completed training. It is anticipated that one resident will complete training in this program annually.
