The Department of Ophthalmology at Mayo Clinic’s campus in Rochester provides services for more than 110,000 outpatient visits each year. The state-of-the-art facilities at Mayo Clinic expose the fellow to cutting-edge procedures and equipment. Mayo Clinic's faculty is committed to teaching and facilitating the growth of medical knowledge. Nearly all the department’s ophthalmic subspecialists have published and lectured extensively and all are well regarded in their field. You will have direct access to these individuals throughout your training.

The Department of Ophthalmology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester has 29 staff members, including two Ph.D. researchers. The Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus Service is composed of three pediatric ophthalmologists, each with research interest and specialty emphasis on different aspects of the subspecialty:

  • Jonathan Holmes, M.D., specializes in complicated adult strabismus, pediatric strabismus and amblyopia
  • Michael Brodsky, M.D., has expertise in pediatric neuro-ophthalmology and general pediatric ophthalmology
  • Brian Mohney, M.D., is interested in pediatric disorders that include pediatric cataract, glaucoma, retinoblastoma, strabismus, and retinopathy of prematurity.

In addition, 12 ophthalmology residents and several fellows are either in clinical or research training.

Visiting Professors
Many prominent professors visit Mayo Clinic each year. They present their work during noon and/or morning lectures and participate in hospital rounds. You will be encouraged to take full advantage of these opportunities.
