Clinical rotations are spent with members of the adult lower extremity reconstruction faculty. Fellows work one on one with faculty members to deliver patient care to patients. Individualized instruction, patterned to that fellow’s interests and needs, develops as a natural extension of this daily interaction. The rotations result in a rapid progression of responsibilities.
Educational activities, conferences and clinical research projects derive from these day to day interactions with patients and faculty members. Fellows develop skills based on the challenges posed by busy, complex and diverse individual clinical practices.
Research Opportunities
Fellows have the opportunity to pursue clinical research projects during time blocks when they are free of any clinical assignment. This typically happens during the second or third academic quarter, for those interested in maximizing the extensive clinical research opportunities available within the department.
Didactic Training
Clinical conferences, seminars, small discussion groups, journal clubs and one-on-one instruction are an integral part of the Adult Lower Extremity Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship. You will be encouraged to take full advantage of the following opportunities:
- Tuesday Morning Adult Reconstructive Case Conference
- Tuesday Night Lecture Series
- Monday Morning Grand Rounds
- Organizing and presenting cases at weekly adult reconstructive conferences
Research Training
Your research opportunities at Mayo Clinic are outstanding. During your fellowship, you are encouraged to complete at least one patient-related research project.
Call Frequency
There is no call in this fellowship.
Evaluation
To ensure that you acquire adequate knowledge and develop your technical skills, your performance will be monitored carefully during the course of your fellowship. Each quarter the consultants choose two core competency forms to complete for you, along with an evaluation form. These will be shared with you at the end of the quarter and then filed away in their permanent file. The program director also meets with each fellow semiannually to discuss progress during the year, and to address any concerns that may arise.
Teaching Opportunities
Teaching opportunities may be available when a medical student or junior resident is assigned to certain orthopedic services.
