Program Description
Mayo Clinic offers a fully accredited four-year residency program in Obstetrics & Gynecology.

The goal of the program is to provide a unique blend of traditional didactics and mentorship coupled with state-of-the-art learning, which utilizes simulation labs and interactive computer-based learning.

The training program is designed to prepare graduates for general private practice or as the foundation for subspecialty fellowship training.

Education at Mayo Clinic offers:

  • Affiliation with two hospitals in Rochester, Minn. There are no "private patients" at Mayo Clinic.  For the resident physician, this offers a great opportunity to be involved in the care of a great variety of local, national, and international patients.  This mixture of patients affords the resident physician to see many common clinical problems but also some very unique and rare medical conditions as well.
  • Excellent hospital support including comprehensive ancillary support for blood draws, IV starts, and transporting patients, etc., leaving the resident physician free to attend medical aspects of patient care.
  • Because of the large patient volumes, it is not necessary for you to travel to other sites, unless this is done as an elective.  This tends to be less disruptive for residents with families.
  • Electronic medical record computerization.  All radiographic imaging, labs, consultations, etc. are available on numerous computer terminals in the institution.  New patients at Mayo Clinic no longer have a paper medical chart.
  • Reasonable call schedule, with responsibility commensurate with experience.  Excellent faculty supervision while still allowing reasonable autonomy.
  • Residents will have a comprehensive exposure to all aspects of ob/gyn, including the various subspecialties. It is expected that residents will participate in all aspects of reproductive medicine to the level specified by the Ob/Gyn Residency Review Committee as well as the CREOG learning objectives.

Accreditation
Mayo Clinic's Obstetrics & Gynecology Residency Training Program meets the requirements of the American Board of Obstetrics & Gynecology.

Program Outcomes
One measure of the success of a program is tracking trainees after graduation. Of the residents of this program post-graduate from 2002 through 2005, six entered advanced fellowships; six entered general practice and four are in an academic setting.

Program History
The Obstetrics & Gynecology Residency began at Mayo Clinic in Rochester in 1919, and since that time, more than 330 physicians have completed training. It is anticipated that four residents will complete training in this program annually.
