Educational Programs

Scholarship

  • Research Funding - Internal Medicine receives millions of dollars in extramural funding, including NIH awards, each year.  The Mayo Department of Medicine ranks very competitively among departments of medicine nationally in NIH funding for research.   • >3600 peer reviewed manuscripts and >5,000 reviews and book chapter citations for Mayo Internal Medicine faculty over the past 3 years.
  • Scholarly activity (average per 3rd year resident): 6-7 projects; 4-5 abstracts or presentations; 2-3 peer-reviewed manuscripts published; 2-3 more peer-reviewed manuscripts accepted, submitted or in preparation.
  • Residents average >3 Mayo-sponsored trips for scientific presentation and 1 trip for attendance per resident during 2nd and 3rd years.
  • Mayo ranks #1 in number of winners nationally in the American College of Physicians Resident Research Competition since inception.

Program Highlights

  • Over 3 years, residents spend on average ~50% of their time in outpatient/consultative settings and ~50% of their time on inpatient services

  • 23 inpatient teaching services. All patients on teaching services are cared for by teams of residents and a single teaching/supervising attending. There are no private patients or attendings.
  • Of the >600 faculty, ~200 are selected to work with residents on the basis of evaluations from the residents.
  • Average procedures/resident: 42 (including 11 central lines/resident on average).
  • Duty-hour Limits: We are fully committed to the ACGME guidelines for duty hours. Long-call occurs one in 4-6 nights on inpatient services. A variety of mechanisms are employed to ensure compliance with the ACGME guidelines. (See Resident Responsibilities.)
  • On all inpatient rotations, residents have at least one day off each week.
  • Each resident completes a 3-year curriculum in Evidence-Based Medicine and presents at the Clinical Decision Making Journal Club as a participant and tutor for interns.

  • Each resident completes a curriculum in Teaching and the Science of Medical Education.
  • Each resident completes a curriculum in quality improvement and change management within the health care system.
  • Up-to-Date and an extensive array of electronic textbooks are provided to residents. An 8-week intensive ABIM Board Review Course is incorporated into the program.

  • Elective opportunities (with travel and housing provided) at Mayo Clinic sites in Jacksonville, FL and Scottsdale, AZ.
  • Consistently updated resident website with quick navigation/access to schedules, etc.
  • Residents' Council (i.e. residents selected by their peers) meets monthly with the Program Director and leadership to continuously improve the program.
  • PGY-1 salary: $46,653. PGY-3 salary: $50,529. Salaries as of July 2009.

  • Vacation: 15 days/year (i.e. 3 seven-day blocks).

  • ACGME-designated Educational Innovation Project participant.
  • Increased elective time and opportunities, reduction in inpatient-call months, 1 in 6 long-call for all intern rotations.
  • Service capacity caps for medicine services in order to enhance education and decrease service.
  • Regular use of 'Turning Point Technologies’ audience participation system for conferences.
  • Web-based electronic curriculum for each rotation.

  • Mayo International Health Program – Scholarships of up to $2,000 are available for third-world health-care elective rotation.
