Board Reviews
To prepare for the American Board of Internal Medicine Certifying Examination, third-year residents begin Board review sessions in the fall. In addition, all residents receive a complimentary copy of the Mayo Board Review textbook (published on a biennial basis) and MedStudy Review books. Webcasts and lecture notes of Mayo Rochester board review sessions are available via the Mayo Intranet.
Library Services
Mayo Clinic Libraries are dedicated to meeting the information needs of Mayo Clinic employees, students, and patients. The Mayo libraries comprise one of the most comprehensive medical library systems in North America. Mayo Clinic’s medical practice, biomedical research and education activities are served by this system, encompassing three practice sites and the Mayo Health System across five states.
Information services, in-depth library research assistance, expert literature research, electronic document delivery, and online training services help library users access and effectively use traditional and digital resources. The library system features a database-driven, and customizable intranet Web site. These assets include 5,000 current journal titles, 3500 electronic journals, and 90,000 book titles.

Textbooks
Residents receive an electronic set of learning objectives and a teaching syllabus at the beginning of each rotation. All residents have access to Up-To-Date. A collection of over 3,600 electronic medical texts can be accessed from any physician workstations throughout the medical center, or via remote access from home when connected to the Mayo network.
Cardiac Life Support Certification
Each resident must be certified in Basic Cardiac Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) before starting residency. ACLS courses are offered during orientation, before the start of the academic year. The ACLS recertification course also is offered periodically to facilitate recertification. Mayo pays for the cost of certification and recertification.
Computer Services
Computer workstations are available in nursing units, resident work areas, resident call-rooms, library, and in all outpatient clinics. Residents can use the computers to access the computerized patient-record system, laboratory test results, and pharmacology data, to conduct literature searches, and to access the Internet and Mayo Clinic's internal electronic messaging system.
Residents use a sophisticated electronic medical record system for both inpatients and outpatients. All residents have access to computerized intensive care units, medical record system, laboratory results, retrieval and review of radiologic studies, and literature and textbook access at each nursing station; as well as state-of-the-art surgery, radiology and laboratory services. Fully staffed computer help and support systems are available 24 hours per day every day of the year.
Telecommunications
Mayo Clinic's facilities in Rochester, Florida and Arizona are linked via a sophisticated satellite telecommunications system, which provides video teleconferencing and data transmission. Staff can have live, interactive consultations with physicians and their patients at the other sites via TV monitors. In addition, x-rays, laboratory test results, CT scans, ECGs, angiograms and pathology slides can be transmitted between sites.
An advanced telecommunications system also is the foundation for Mayo Clinic's unique seven-digit telephone dialing and pager system. Physicians can be easily contacted for consultations or updates, thereby strengthening teamwork among consultants, fellows, residents and allied health staff at all three practice sites.
