The one-year Transplant Hepatology Fellowship at Mayo Clinic Arizona offers a thorough, advanced education in transplant and non-transplant hepatology. The curriculum is carefully designed to provide a balance of clinical, didactic and investigative experience, and to prepare you for a career in academic hepatology. The training fulfills United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) criteria for liver transplant physicians.
As a fellow in the Transplant Hepatology Fellowship, you will train with a dedicated and enthusiastic faculty of hepatologists, transplant surgeons, and other specialists in the areas of Gastroenterology, Pathology, Radiology, Infectious Diseases, Immunology and Psychiatry.
Faculty
Six faculty members are board certified in Transplant Hepatology. They are: Thomas Byrne, M.D., Elizabeth Carey, M.D., David Douglas, M.D., M. Edwyn Harrison, M.D., Jorge Rakela, M.D., and Hugo Vargas, M.D.
Accreditation
Transplant Hepatology is an ACGME-accredited fellowship. This training program fulfills the requirements for training as stated by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
Certification
At the end of the program, a fellow will be eligible to take the Transplant Hepatology Board Certification exam offered through the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Program History
The Hepatology/Liver Transplant Fellowship began in 1999, and since then, more than 15 physicians have completed training. It is anticipated that two fellows will complete training in this program annually.
