Purpose
To explore medical specialty career paths through career development workshops and individually tailored clinical experiences.

Dates and Locations
Mayo Clinic is pleased to announce that the Career Development Program is now available at all three Mayo Clinic sites as follows:

  • Mayo Clinic Arizona: Not offered at this location in 2009
  • Mayo Clinic Jacksonville: Not offered at this location in 2009
  • Mayo Clinic Rochester: June 8 – 12, 2009

This program is offered during two separate weeks in Rochester, Minnesota, and one week each in Jacksonville, Florida, and Phoenix/Scottsdale, Arizona.  All sessions are designed for medical students between years 2 and 3.

The following factors are considered when matching selected applicants to program location:

  • Date(s) applicant is available
  • Medical specialty preference
  • Mayo site preference
  • Residency program availability at preferred Mayo site

Eligibility Requirements

  • Currently enrolled as a medical student between your second and third year of medical school.
  • The College of Medicine at Mayo Clinic considers under-represented individuals as belonging to the following groups: African American, Hispanic/Latino, American Indian, Native Alaskan,Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, and members of other racial and ethnic groups considered to be under-represented in medicine and biomedical research.
  • United States citizen and/or permanent resident enrolled in a United States LCME-accredited medical school.

Highlights
This program is designed to provide you tools to advance your own career, as well as introduce you to Mayo Clinic and the multiple programs offered here.

  • Learn more about the wide range of medical specialty training options available at Mayo Clinic.
  • Meet with residency program directors, faculty and residents from Mayo's three practice sites.
  • Participate in workshops to build career skills and increase competitiveness of residency applications.
  • Learn about the Mayo Clinic Model of Care through outpatient and inpatient clinical observation.
  • Explore multiple medical specialty career paths and review career goals with experienced academic physicians.
  • Gain insight into the future of medicine and your options to be a leader in the medical community.

Program Length

  • One week (Sunday arrival; Saturday departure)

Application

  • Application deadline: April 24, 2009
  • Rolling Admission Process:  Monthly review of applications will begin on November 2008.  It is recommended that you apply early.  Based on criteria identified by the Review Committee, applicants will be placed into tiered groups.  Action on applications will be posted by the 20th of each month.  It may be necessary to defer action on some applications from one month to the next.

Financial Support
Travel expense, meals and lodging provided by Mayo Clinic.

The Career Development Program is offered at all of our campuses:

    Campus assignment is based on participants’ stated preference (a match with date preference, a match with clinical interests and available resources). When applying, students are asked to indicate their site preference in descending order. Prior to indicating site/campus preference, students are encouraged to identify whether the medical specialties they are interested in are available at that campus.
