Consultative Medicine - Arizona
Description:
Medical students participating in the Division of Consultative Medicine (CMED) Clerkship Program at Mayo Clinic’s Arizona campus will work with a division that includes approximately 12 Internal Medicine consultants.
Specific Goals:
- Learn the principles of effective medical evaluations for patients with ill-defined or multifaceted problems.
- Better understand the process of comprehensive medical evaluations, including prioritizing patients needs, reviewing the available medical data, interviewing and examining the patient, interviewing appropriate family members/friends, utilizing subspecialty consultations as needed, formulating an answer, and developing a management plan to address the patient’s needs.
- Learn how to utilize the resources of an integrated, tertiary care medical center for testing and referral in an expeditious and cost-effective manner.
- Recognize how to meet the medical evaluation needs of patients traveling from throughout the United States.
- Recognize how to meet the medical evaluation needs of international patients.
- Practice how to work with a medical interpreter.
Activity Outline:
Medical students will participate in the day-to-day workings of the CMED division. Appropriate patients will be assigned to the student, who will conduct the preliminary evaluation. The student will be asked to determine the primary focus of the patient’s evaluation or multiple issues that need to be addressed. The student will be responsible for:
- reviewing the patient’s medical records and seeking additional information as needed under the supervision of the consulting staff
- obtaining an appropriate history and performing a physical examination on the patient
- presenting and reviewing the patient’s case with the Internal Medicine consultant
- generating an impression of the patient’s primary symptoms and/or diagnosis
- developing a plan for additional evaluation and management
Teaching will include case discussions of specific patients as well as relevant topics that arise in the context of case presentations. During the course of the clerkship, the student will be asked to present a short informal talk. Students will be expected to attend Department of Medicine Grand Rounds on Fridays from 8 to 9 a.m.
Method of Evaluation:
The student will be evaluated by the supervising consultants using a standardized evaluation system, narrative comments, and verbal feedback. Evaluation of the student’s performance and professionalism will be assessed midway through the rotation and again at the conclusion.
