The first two years of your clinical training will be spent in core rotations. You will obtain the basic knowledge and technical skills necessary to proceed to more advanced training in a subspecialty area.
The first year consists of rotations through the various subspecialty laboratories. During the second year, the information learned in the laboratories will be applied to patient care (inpatient and outpatient). The core rotation areas are:
Hospital Service
- Two months per year
- You will supervise the team of residents, interns, medical students, and nurse practitioners with different attending physicians each week.
Heart Transplant / Advanced Heart Failure Service
- One month per year
- Along with registered nurse (RN) coordinators and an advanced registered nurse practitioner (ARNP), you will supervise the service (with oversight by a transplant cardiologist).
Echocardiography
- Minimum six months during the fellowship
- During your first year of training, the first two months of echo training are exclusively in the outpatient setting. Thereafter, this rotation will incorporate work in the hospital setting, where transesophageal echocardiography is also performed.
Electrophysiology
- Minimum three months
- Includes inpatient and outpatient consultation, invasive electrophysiology, defibrillator and permanent pacemaker insertions.
Cardiac Catheterization
- Minimum six months
- You will train in state-of-the-art labs with experienced interventional cardiologists.
Nuclear Cardiology
- Minimum two months
- During this rotation, you will interpret large volume of stress tests.
- This rotation is combined with advanced cardiac imaging.
- The first two weeks of each of two combined rotations is dedicated to nuclear cardiology.
- An entire month in your third year is devoted entirely to nuclear cardiology.
Advanced Imaging
- Minimum one month
- During this rotation you will be introduced to radiologic principles including instrumentation, image acquisition and processing, and interpretation of cardiac magnetic resonance images and cardiac computed tomographic images.
- You will work with radiologists and cardiologists. These specialists have specific expertise in advanced cardiac imaging and collaborate in performing, analyzing and interpreting studies.
Outpatient Continuity Clinic
- One-half day per week
- On average, four to six patients per half-day clinic
- Supervised by a staff cardiologist
EKG
- Minimum exposure will be 3,500 EKGs over three years.
Electives
- Opportunities are available in your area of interest, along with certain rotations at Mayo Clinic’s campuses in Minnesota and Arizona.
Didactic Training
During the Cardiovascular Diseases Fellowship at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, you will participate in a variety of lectures and conferences, which include:
- One clinical cardiology conference/every other week
- One echo conference weekly (Every other week, this conference originates from Rochester, Minn.)
- One EP conference monthly
- One journal club meeting monthly
- One cardiology grand rounds monthly
- Core curriculum lectures from Rochester once a week
- One cardiac transplant selection conference weekly
In addition, you can participate in conferences in other cardiology subspecialty areas.
We will fund registration and travel expenses for attendance at one domestic cardiology meeting of your choice, with approval from the program director.
Research Training
You will spend a total of six months dedicated to research. A certain block of academic time will be devoted to research. In addition, one to two days per week may be allotted to research during the echo rotation.
We will fund your participation in national and regional meetings at which your clinical research data is presented. Publication of research in peer-reviewed journals is encouraged.
Call Frequency
During the Cardiovascular Diseases Fellowship, you will be on call once per week during all rotations except the inpatient service and cardiac transplantation service. During those rotations (which comprise nine months of the three-year fellowship), you will take call twice a week. All call can be taken from home.
Moonlighting
Intramural moonlighting is not permitted during this fellowship.
