Year 1
During your first year, you'll focus primarily on oral and maxillofacial surgery training, while on assignments at Saint Marys Hospital, Rochester Methodist Hospital and Mayo Clinic. You will learn how to perform patient evaluations, conduct physical examinations and develop treatment plans.
You'll also take emergency call for minor oral and maxillofacial surgery problems and will handle trauma call under the direction of a senior resident.
Year 2
Year 2 begins with a five-week rotation on Mayo Clinic's oral and maxillofacial surgery services. During this rotation, you'll continue to develop your evaluation, diagnostic and treatment skills.
Then you will enter your first year at Mayo Medical School as a full-time medical student. Your training will include on-call oral and maxillofacial surgery responsibilities during appropriate quarters. Additional oral and maxillofacial surgery training occurs during medical school breaks. Your call schedule will vary by individual rotation. Mayo Clinic follows the recommendations of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education when scheduling call duties.
Year 3
Your third year starts with a six-week rotation in oral and maxillofacial surgery, where you'll continue to evaluate and treat patients. The rest of the year will be spent at Mayo Medical School taking clinical clerkships.
You also will take courses in pharmacology, therapeutics and laboratory medicine. At the end of the year, you'll take Part I of the medical board examination and rotate on the anesthesia service.
Year 4
This year combines portions of the standard third and fourth years of Mayo Medical School's curriculum. In addition, you'll spend several weeks in oral and maxillofacial surgery, where you will assume increasing responsibility for patients. Your medical degree will be conferred when you complete this academic year.
Year 5
You will spend your fifth year in general surgery. In addition, you will gain further experience in anesthesia, plastic surgery and the O.M.S. head and neck trauma service.
Year 6
If you qualify, you will be appointed as chief resident associate (CRA) in oral and maxillofacial surgery during your last year of training. You will serve at Mayo Clinic and Saint Marys and Rochester Methodist hospitals. During this year you'll work more independently as you evaluate, diagnose and treat patients on the oral and maxillofacial surgery service.
