History

Excellence Through Innovation and Compassionate Care

With the arrival of Dr. William Worrell Mayo in Minnesota in 1855, medical practice in the United States began to undergo a radical transformation. When his two sons, Will and Charles, joined their father’s Rochester surgical practice in the 1880s, Mayo medicine, then as now, was distinctive.

Enduring hallmarks of Mayo medicine include healthcare that is:

  • patient-centered
  • collaborative
  • informed and improved by research and medical education
  • committed to professional growth by making the best use of the latest advances for the improvement of public health
