The mission of the Mayo Clinic Initiative to Maximize Student Diversity (IMSD) is to train and guide students toward careers in biomedical research. This research includes the continuum from basic laboratory studies to carefully controlled clinical trials. The program focuses on increasing the number of researchers among underrepresented ethnic minorities and encouraging others who have demonstrated an interest in studying the medical research questions of these groups.

Through the IMSD, Mayo Graduate School presents students a dynamic research experience in a supportive environment characterized by outstanding resources, a cooperative approach to research, and an atmosphere with the highest level of mutual respect among all students and staff.

Research Training Opportunities
Biomedical research is much more than working in a laboratory, isolated from the world and its pressing medical problems. To make measurable research progress, talented individuals with Ph.D., M.D., and M.D.-Ph.D. degrees must work together. Opportunities abound at Mayo Clinic for students to work along every step of the research continuum. The IMSD Program purposefully brings together students at different levels of training who have many different interests.

Admissions and Contacts
The IMSD Program is funded by a grant from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, National Institutes of Health. To be eligible, you must be a member of an ethnic group historically underrepresented in medicine and research, or have a demonstrated commitment to serving them. You also must be a U.S. citizen or have permanent resident status.

The deadline for applying is Feb. 1.
