The Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (BMB) Program integrates researchers from across Mayo Clinic’s diverse scientific strengths and provides an exceptional graduate-level educational experience. Students will learn to conduct molecular research in basic science and model organisms with the vast majority of projects directly related to human disease.

The BMB Program provides graduate training through three subtracks:

  • Biochemistry and Structural Biology
  • Cell Biology and Genetics
  • Cancer Biology

Current areas of BMB research include:

  • Endocytosis, vesicular and lipid trafficking and protein sorting
  • Genetic and epigenetic studies in cancer and monogenic disorders
  • Protein folding and diseases of abnormal folding
  • Biochemical, cellular and genetic analysis of heart disease
  • Role of centrosomes and cilia in disease
  • Molecular analysis of fibrosis
  • DNA structure and transcriptional regulation
  • Transcription factors and signaling cascades in cancer
  • Role of estrogens in osteoporosis and cancer
  • Epithelial biology in disease studies
  • Iron and calcium homeostasis

These studies employ human disease specimens and an array of model systems including mice, zebrafish, drosophila and yeast.

Aiding these studies are imaging resources for visualization at the whole organ, cellular, molecular and atomic levels, as well as state-of-the-art genomics and proteomic facilities.

Director's Welcome

"A particular emphasis of the BMB Program at Mayo is the study of the molecular mechanisms of human disease with a view to understanding pathogenesis and development of effective therapies." more...
