Becca Laugen - Participating in research for the good of her family

"I was worried about how to fit the study activities into my schedule, but researchers were very flexible with scheduling"

In her early twenties, Becca Laugen is already an experienced research participant. She's volunteered for three studies conducted by CTSA researchers that deal with diabetes — a condition that runs in Becca's family. Although she doesn't have diabetes, she hopes her efforts will help those who do.

Her efforts are notable. For her first two studies, she ate special meals for several days that were prepared by nutritionists. During her most recent study, she committed to hour-long morning workouts, Monday through Friday. She says the morning workouts have gotten her in great shape. The researchers made it easy to participate in the process, Laugen says. "I was worried about how to fit the study activities into my schedule, but they were very flexible with scheduling."

Laugen found out about the studies from her mother, who is a research technician at Mayo Clinic. She says that at first, her friends thought she was "crazy" to be a research participant. After a story about Laugen appeared in a local newspaper, her friends became intrigued. "Many of them asked how to get involved; they're curious about research and what goes on," Laugen says. As a result, one of her co-workers volunteered for a study.

Although Laugen is not familiar with all aspects of the science behind the studies, she feels she has been provided with enough information to make an informed decision, and she knows she can ask for more information if she wishes. "The study team gives you a packet of information to start; and I ask questions as I go along about what's happening." She also has confidence that her personal information has been managed appropriately by the researchers. States Laugen, "These researchers know what they are doing. I trust them."
