Introduction
BIRPacs is a DICOM image storage system which integrates cleanly with Analyze. It is available in two versions: BIRPacs_S, a self-contained version for a single user on a single system, and BIRPacs_CS, a client-server version designed for multiple users and multiple Analyze Image Workstations. The program conforms to the DICOM 3.0 standard, and will interoperate with other DICOM compliant systems.
The BirPacs_S contains two local Application Entities (AEs): Storage and Query/Retrieve.
The Storage AE acts as an SCP for the Storage Service Class. It can receive images from an external DICOM systems. The AE can respond to external storage requests which are unsolicited, or as a result of DICOM C-Move requests. The Storage AE does not take on the SCU role.
The Query/Retrieve AE operates as an SCU for the Query/Retrieve service class. It can retrieve patient, study and series demographics from external DICOM Query/Retrieve SCPs. Retrieveals are given the AE destination of the Storage AE. It can also issue C-Move requests to an external DICOM SCP to retrieve images into the BirPacs Storage AE.
