Matthew R. Callstrom, M.D., Ph.D., is a consultant in the Division of Diagnostic Radiology at Mayo Clinic and a professor of radiology at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. Dr. Callstrom's research is centered on interventional oncology.

Focus areas

• Percutaneous ablation. A significant area of focus involves the use of percutaneous ablation methods for treating cancer in the liver, kidney, bone, lung and soft tissue. As part of this effort, Dr. Callstrom's research team has conducted several clinical trials to evaluate the effectiveness of both radiofrequency ablation and cryoablation for palliation of painful metastases involving bone. Three ongoing trials will determine whether cryoablation is beneficial for the treatment of focal painful metastatic disease for patients that have failed conventional therapies, compare the effectiveness of cryoablation with radiation therapy for patients that present with painful metastases, and determine the effectiveness of both radiofrequency ablation and cryoablation for stimulation of a systemic immunological response to metastatic melanoma.
• Image fusing. An additional area of interest is the development of image fusion of previously acquired CT, MRI or PET imaging with real-time ultrasound imaging. This research involves acquisition of 3-D volumes of ultrasound data linked to a magnetic position sensor for correlation with the real-time imaging, image fusion and registration, and development of tools for biopsy and ablation using fusion imaging.

Significance to patient care

Dr. Callstrom's research contributes to the development of technologies that will allow better identification and treatment of cancer in the liver, kidney, bone, lung and soft tissue as well as indeterminate lesions in the liver and kidney.
