About Dr. Ackerman
Dr. Ackerman was born and raised in Iowa where he earned the B.A. degree in chemistry and mathematics from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa and graduated summa cum laude in 1988. He received his M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from Mayo Medical School and Mayo Graduate School in 1995. He also did a postdoctoral research fellowship in Dr. Stephen Thibodeau’s lab with a Howard W. Sieben’s Molecular Medicine award. He did his residency training in pediatrics and adolescent medicine and fellowship training in pediatric cardiology in the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine from 1995-2000. During this time, Dr. Ackerman received the Mayo Brother’s Distinguished Fellowship award in 1997 and the Donald C. Balfour award from the Mayo Alumni Association in 2000.
Dr. Ackerman joined the staff of Mayo Clinic in July 2000 as a senior associate consultant and Assistant Professor in Medicine and Pediatrics. In 2003, Dr. Ackerman was promoted to both consultant and to Associate Professor in three disciplines: Medicine/Cardiovascular Diseases, Pediatrics/Pediatric Cardiology, and Molecular Pharmacology. In 2007, Dr. Ackerman received the 25th distinguished Young Investigator Award from the Society for Pediatric Research.
