Luis F. Tapias Vargas, M.D., researches factors that influence the treatment, outcomes and survivorship of patients with thoracic malignancies, such as lung and esophageal cancers. In particular, he studies patients with stage 1 lung cancer. He also studies treatment outcomes in patients with rare thoracic malignancies.

• Outcomes of surgery for stage 1 lung cancer. Dr. Tapias Vargas studies factors that influence cancer recurrence and long-term survival of patients who undergo surgery to treat stage 1 lung cancer. In particular, he studies tumor and surgical factors and their impact on results, such as the implications of resection of lymph nodes during surgery.
• Outcomes of surgery for esophageal cancer. Dr. Tapias Vargas studies factors that affect treatment results in patients with esophageal cancer. His research analyzes nonmodifiable factors such as age. It also examines modifiable factors such as body composition, surgical technique and margins after surgery.
• Minimally invasive surgery for esophageal cancer. Dr. Tapias Vargas has studied the early implementation of minimally invasive surgery techniques to perform esophagectomy, which is the curative-intent, standard surgical procedure for patients with esophageal cancer. This includes the use of laparoscopy, video-assisted thoracic surgery and robotic surgery. He studies the safety and impact of applying minimally invasive techniques in patients who have received neoadjuvant therapy. He also studies the learning curve of these techniques and the implementation of new technologies such as robotic surgery.
• Rare thoracic malignancies. Dr. Tapias Vargas studies rare thoracic malignancies, such as solitary fibrous tumors of the pleura, other thoracic sarcomas and rare esophageal cancers. For solitary fibrous tumors of the pleura, he has developed, published and validated a scoring system to help predict long-term recurrence after curative-intent surgery, explored the role of biomarkers such as PD-L1, and studied the impact of tumor metabolic activity on long-term outcomes.
