SUMMARY

The research laboratory led by Sumera I. Ilyas, M.B.B.S., is focused on the immunobiology of liver cancer. Because of the limited understanding of the immune microenvironment of liver cancer, there is ample opportunity for Dr. Ilyas' lab to contribute to a deeper comprehension of disease pathogenesis and advancements in treatment. Her research team employs immunocompetent models of primary and metastatic liver cancer to study mechanisms of tumor immune evasion. The long-term goal of Dr. Ilyas' research is to develop immune-directed therapies for the treatment of cancer.

Focus areas

  • Mechanisms of immune evasion in liver cancer. The research conducted in Dr. Ilyas' lab has demonstrated that immunosuppressive myeloid cells mediate tumor immune evasion in cholangiocarcinoma. Her team uses single cell technologies and multiomics to characterize immunosuppressive elements and their crosstalk in the liver cancer immune microenvironment.
  • Development of immune-directed therapies. Dr. Ilyas and colleagues have developed immunocompetent models of primary and metastatic liver cancer. Her research team uses these models to study novel therapies targeting the immune microenvironment of cancer.

Significance to patient care

Dr. Ilyas' career goal is to improve the lives of patients with cancer. As a clinician-scientist, Dr. Ilyas is uniquely able to translate investigational observations into clinical practice. A better understanding of the immune microenvironment of liver cancer will guide development of novel immunotherapy combinations for the treatment of cancer.
