Mannitol-Based Solutions in the Quantification of Visceral Hypersensitivity

The purpose of this study is to assess the degree of GI dysfunction after (pain, nausea, diarrhea) utilizing visual analogue scales in patients undergoing CTEs for other causes vs. patients with known small bowel ulcerations/strictures (Crohn’s disease) with pain to develop normative and known abnormal values. Compare the degree of GI dysfunction in patients with DGBIs (Functional dyspepsia, irritable bowel syndrome, chronic abdominal pain) to patients undergoing CTEs for other causes and those with documented small bowel damage.

 

Elegibilidad para participar

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Patients >18 years of age undergoing CT enterography.
  • Willingness to participate in the study.
  • Capacity to provide informed consent.
  • Patient diagnosed with or suspected to have DGBI.
  • No evidence of organic, systemic, or metabolic disease (e.g. diabetes mellitus) to explain the symptoms on routine investigations.

Exclusion Criteria: 

  • History of any bowel surgery.
  • Presence of documented pseudo-obstruction, diabetes mellitus with a hemoglobin A1c of more than or equal to 8, scleroderma, slow transit constipation and other diseases (structural or metabolic) which could interfere with interpretation of the study results.
