Evaluation Research - The Wiser Choices Program

The Wiser Choices Program develops and tests patient-centered and evidence-based decision aids in clinical practice. These tools help clinicians convey information consistent with the best available evidence designed in a way to combine with the values and preferences of the informed patient. Thus far, our work has shown:

  • We can improve action (medication starts)
  • Adherence (medication use) improves by involving patients with diabetes in the decision to use statins

Our pilot work has shown that diabetes issue cards can help patients choose among alternative anti-hyperglycemic treatments; a heretofore “technical decision.” With greater patient involvement we hypothesize comes greater safety and efficacy in health care delivery.

We are now in the process of implementing decision aids in health systems and observing their effects in real-time acute and chronic care contexts.
