Jayant A. Talwalkar, M.D., is a transplant hepatologist with training in health services and policy research. Dr. Talwalkar's area of interest is health care policy analysis, focusing on the organization, delivery and financing of specialty care in the United States and other major economic countries around the world. His work is focused on populations with chronic liver disease and recipients of liver transplantation.

Dr. Talwalkar's research interests are pursued in collaboration with colleagues from the Division of Health Care Policy and Research and the Robert D. and Patricia E. Kern Center for the Science of Health Care Delivery.

Focus areas

  • Regulatory policies on performance measurement and improvement in solid organ transplantation
  • Payment reform, including episode-based models describing care pathways supported by clinical practice guidelines
  • Unintended effects of health insurance policy reform on access to and quality of medical care

Significance to patient care

The research performed by Dr. Talwalkar and his colleagues contributes to identifying the impacts and unintended consequences of health care policy enactment and reform on the clinical practice of medicine.
