2016-2017 Surgical Outcomes Research Fellow, Rochester, Minnesota

What moment or experience in your life influenced your decision to be a clinician?

Brittany L. Murphy, M.D.
  • Surgical Outcomes Research Fellow, 2016-2017
  • General Surgery Resident

When I was young, a friend of mine was slashed across the face with a figure skating blade. The physical and psychological transformations that physicians were able to help her through sparked an interest in me — I wanted to make a similar difference for people. Ever since then, I've been pursuing my passion for medicine and patient care.

What motivated you to become a Surgical Outcomes Research Fellow?

It has always been a desire of mine to improve patient care and help progress the field of medicine through medical research. The Surgical Outcomes Research Fellowship provided me the opportunity to perform surgical outcomes medical research, increasing my statistical knowledge and teaching me how to use secondary data sources to inform clinical care.

Given the positive and productive years past Surgical Outcomes Research Fellows have had, I knew that through this fellowship I would gain knowledge and learn skills to help me perform surgical outcomes research throughout my general surgery career.

What is your focus as a scholar within the Mayo Clinic Robert D. and Patricia E. Kern Center for the Science of Health Care Delivery?

My main focus as a research scholar is improving surgical outcomes for patients, with a primary focus on breast cancer. To do this, I have focused on studies using Mayo Clinic institutional data sources, the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program and the National Cancer Database. I have also embarked on projects to improve patient care and surgical quality.

How will your research improve patient care or impact public health?

One of my areas of focus for this year is quality improvement. Specifically, I'm performing a project that classifies complications following breast cancer operations. This study will allow us to optimize surgical care by identifying factors that lead to patient complications with the ultimate goal of improving patient care, treatment and overall patient experience.

Why did you choose Mayo Clinic to pursue your career?

The Mayo Clinic provides a unique experience with multidisciplinary care provided by experts in their respective fields with a strong focus on patient care. I knew that the education I would receive at Mayo Clinic would be unparalleled. I am grateful for the opportunities I have had and will continue to have.
