The lab's radiochemistry research hot cell is equipped with manipulators to handle high radioactivity doses.

The Molecular Imaging and Radionuclide Therapy Lab on Mayo Clinic's campus in Rochester, Minnesota, includes facilities for nonradioactive chemistry, with 20 linear feet of chemistry fume hood space. The radiochemistry space includes:

  • Two shielded fume hoods.
  • A chemistry fume hood.
  • A hot cell.
  • A biological lab.
  • A separate cell culture room.

The lab is fully equipped for radiochemistry, radiopharmacology, molecular biology and tissue culture experiments.

The lab's organic synthetic chemistry lab is equipped with chemical fume hoods, synthesis stations, rotary evaporators, a freeze dryer and other tools used in organic synthesis. Molecules are proposed based on known biological targeting compounds or existing pharmaceuticals.

A research fellow uses trasis automation in a hot cell, allowing for scalable and reproduceable use in clinical settings. This promotes streamlined production and augmentation of sterile samples.

The lab uses an Xodus Imaging G8 PET/CT scanner to evaluate the biodistribution of new imaging probes in living mice and ex vivo tissues. These investigations are critical for determining feasibility for work in higher animals or humans.

The cell culture lab is equipped with a fluorescence microscope to evaluate the uptake and retention characteristics of novel molecular imaging probes in cancer cells. Studies have revealed the regulatory mechanisms affecting the uptake of choline-based PET scan imaging probes in prostate cancer cells.
