About this study
The purpose of this study is to define the contribution of α-cell function to glucose tolerance in pregnancy and postpartum in women with and without GDM.
Participation eligibility
Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.
Inclusion Criteria:
Women between 20 and 40, years of age
Women with and without GDM (Carpenter and Coustan Criteria)
Women will be pregnant with a viable, singleton pregnancy
Women will have completed their 2nd trimester glucose testing with a 50g glucose 1 hour challenge test +/- a 100 g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT)
Exclusion Crriteria:
Women <20 or >40 years
Active systemic illness (such as chronic kidney disease, hypertension etc.) including a prepregnancy diagnosis of diabetes mellitus
Multiple gestation, major anomaly or non-viable pregnancy on ultrasound
Fasting glucose ≥ 100mg/dL or HbA1c ≥5.7% in early pregnancy, one abnormal value on 3-hour 100g OGTT or glucose ≥190 mg/dL on a glucose challenge test (GCT) with no subsequent 3-hour OGTT completed
Taking medication that affects glucose metabolism before pregnancy or in early pregnancy (prior to GDM screening)
Taking any glucose lowering medication (e.g. metformin, glyburide) other than insulin to treat GDM in the current pregnancy
History of upper GI surgery that alters gastric emptying e.g., bariatric surgery
Hemoglobin < 11g/dL
