A Study Of Lower Extremity Gait And Movement Analysis In Spinal Cord Injury
Overview
Tab Title Description
Study type
ObservationalDescribes the nature of a clinical study. Types include:
- Observational study — observes people and measures outcomes without affecting results.
- Interventional study (clinical trial) — studies new tests, treatments, drugs, surgical procedures or devices.
- Medical records research — uses historical information collected from medical records of large groups of people to study how diseases progress and which treatments and surgeries work best.

About this study
The purpose of this study is to quantify lower extremity gait and movement abnormalities in individuals with SCI using research-grade three-dimensional motion capture/kinematics, synchronized ground reaction force/kinetics, and standard dynamic EMG time-series muscle activity, and to establish a structured kinematic/kinetic/EMG dataset referenced to laboratory normative gait.
Participation eligibility
Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.
Inclusion Criteria:
Age 18 years or older
Diagnosis of spinal cord injury
Scheduled for standard-of-care lower extremity dynamic EMG measures in the Motion Analysis Laboratory as part of pre-operative care, with a planned lower extremity reconstructive procedure
Able to walk independently or with the use of a gait aid or assistance sufficient to complete dynamic EMG and research motion capture procedures
Exclusion Criteria:
Unable to walk, even with a gait aid or assistance, sufficiently to complete motion capture
Unable to return to Mayo Clinic for post-operative follow-up evaluation
Known sensitivity or allergy to medical-grade adhesive tape of a severity that precludes safe marker or electrode application
Any condition that, in the judgment of the investigator, would preclude safe completion of dynamic EMG, walking, or research motion capture assessment
Note: Other protocol defined Inclusion/Exclusion Criteria may apply.
Eligibility last updated 06/30/2026. Questions regarding updates should be directed to the study team contact.
